Library Policies and
Program Eligibility

Library cards are given to anyone who lives, works or attends school in the Towns of Yorktown or Cortlandt (Lakeland School District). Proof of residency, employment, or school attendance is required. No minimum age

To be eligible for programs, a child’s primary parents or guardians must live in Yorktown or Cortlandt in the Lakeland or Putnam Valley school districts. Buchanan, Croton and Montrose residents are not eligible for Hart Library Programs.

The library welcomes children to use its facilities for customary library activities, however, responsibility for children using the library rests with the parent, guardian, or assigned chaperone, not with library personnel.

Children 10 years of age or younger must be accompanied and supervised by an adult or a teenager (16 years or older).

Responsible parties must remain in the building while a child 10 years of age or younger is attending a program.

Patrons are asked to limit the number of books on the same nonfiction topic to three from the adult and/or children’s section.

Teacher Borrowing

Teachers who teach in the Lakeland and Yorktown school districts may request an exception to the library policy of three items on a non-fiction topic or subject (juvenile materials only).

Please ask a librarian about how many books may be borrowed. A decision will be made based on current local demand and the number of items we have on the shelf on the topic.
